Animal Control

Effective May 28, 2026, animal control services for the town of Waltham will be handled by the Hancock County Sheriff's Office. Any animal control complaints should be reported through the Hancock Regional Communications Center at 207-667-7575.

The following complaints are considered “emergency” calls:

» Domestic animal attacks, including animal bites

» The immediate need to locate shelter for a domestic animal due to a homeowner's death, incapacity, or fire

» Horses or other livestock loose in the roadway creating a danger to themselves or traffic

» Situations involving possible animal mistreatment, neglect, or unsafe living conditions for an animal.

These complaints should be coordinated with the State Humane Agent responsible for Hancock County in conjunction with the Sheriff's Office. Emergency calls will be responded to by a deputy as soon as reasonably available, but at a minimum within 24 hours of receiving the complaint.

Any complaints not listed above will be considered “non-emergency” calls and will be responded to by a deputy from the Sheriff's Office within 96 hours of receiving the complaint.

If you have any questions regarding this transition, please feel free to reach out to the Hancock County Sheriff's Office.
